About Us

Our story bagan with Richard and Caro, who had a passion for growing plants back in the day in England. When they immigrated to New Zealand, they brought that same love and expertise with them. Settling in the picturesque town of Katikati, they started a small nursery from their home, often taking their three daughters along to markets with them on weekends.

In 2002, they purchased the Oropi Rd property and set about establishing the nursery here. It was thanks to a friendly pair of Kererū, the iconic native New Zealand pigeons, that gave the property it's name - greeting Richard and Caro when they first arrived. Inspired by this auspicious encounter, they aptly named their new nursery Kererū Gardens.

Now that Richard and Caro have retired, it is their daughter Kat who has taken the reigns of Kererū Gardens. Propagating and nurturing the seedlings she sources from Katikati and elsewhere, Kat has developed Kererū Gardens into the wonderful, thriving garden centre that you see today.

This is Kat

Kat LOVES plants. Not only that, she loves sharing her knowledge of plants and helping others become more capable and confident gardeners too.

"Plants naturally want to grow! Sometimes we just need to get out of the way and let them."

Whether your browsing in our nursery or following us on our social pages or attending one of our events, Kat will happily share her words of wisdom and gardening expertise with you.

With a background in landscape architecture as well as performing arts plus hands-on work in the nursery, Kat's gardening workshops are always lots of fun as well as incredibly informative. As a natural entertainer and proper plant geek, our events are always popular and sell out fast.

Her passion for the outdoors and plants is obvious as she imparts valuable tips, design advice, and stories from her own journey in the world of gardening. Whether it’s sparking a passion for nature in young students or inspiring seasoned gardeners to try new techniques, Kat relishes the opportunity to connect with others and foster a deeper appreciation for nature.
