Plant of the month
“Camellia Sasanqua 'Setsugekka'”
As the cooler months approach, bringing shorter days and crisper nights, our gardens begin to transition. Many plants retreat into their winter slumber, but not the Camellia Sasanqua ‘Setsugekka’. This plant of the month is a true autumn/winter gem, lighting up the garden with its elegant, large white flowers that contrast beautifully against the glossy dark green leaves.
Origin and Characteristics
The Camellia Sasanqua ‘Setsugekka’, often simply known as ‘Setsugekka’, is a popular cultivar that originated in Japan. Its name translates to “Snow, Moon, and Flowers”, symbolizing beauty in simplicity and elegance, reflecting the serene and picturesque scenes of winter. This evergreen shrub grows to about 3-4 meters in height and width, making it an excellent choice for privacy screens, hedging, or even as a solitary specimen in a garden.
Growing Conditions
Camellia Sasanqua ‘Setsugekka’ is quite adaptable and can thrive in a range of conditions. It prefers slightly acidic, well-draining soil, and while it can tolerate full sun, it does best in partial shade, where it is protected from harsh afternoon sun.
Care and Maintenance
This low-maintenance plant requires little care once established. Annual pruning after flowering helps maintain its shape and promotes denser growth. It is also an excellent time to remove any dead or diseased wood. Mulching around the base with organic material can help retain moisture and protect the roots during extreme temperatures. Fertilize in spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
Landscape Uses
‘Setsugekka’ is incredibly versatile in landscape design. Its elegant form and stunning blooms make it ideal for use in formal gardens, while its dense growth can create an effective privacy screen or windbreak. It can also be grown in a large container on a patio or balcony, making it suitable for those with limited space.
In Conclusion
The Camellia Sasanqua ‘Setsugekka’ stands as a beacon of beauty during the chillier months, reminding us that some plants truly shine when the rest of the garden begins to fade. Its ease of care, graceful appearance, and striking blooms make it a favorite among gardeners and a deserving candidate for the plant of the month.
About Us
Welcome to Kererū Gardens, a cherished family legacy that spans generations and continents. Our story begins with Richard and Caro, who nurtured their passion for growing plants back in the day in England. When they immigrated to New Zealand, they brought that same love and expertise with them. Settling in the quaint town of Katikati, they started a small nursery from their home, often taking their three daughters along to markets on weekends.
In 2002, destiny brought them to a place they could call their forever home for the nursery. To their delight, a pair of kererū, the iconic native New Zealand pigeons, warmly greeted Richard and Caro when they first set eyes on the property. Inspired by this auspicious encounter, they aptly named their new undertaking Kererū Gardens.
