Red flowers, dark green leaves with felted underside, attracts birds.
A tough-as-nails New Zealand native with thick, leathery grey-green leaves and a soft, furry underside. Karo is highly salt-tolerant, making it one of the best choices for coastal gardens and exposed sites. In spring, it produces clusters of small, dark red, honey-scented flowers that attract birds and bees. Fast-growing and adaptable, it flourishes in full sun or light shade. Left to its own devices it can reach 4–6 m tall, forming a dense screen, but it also clips beautifully into a hedge or shelterbelt.
